Sunstone is a popular, typically orange-to-reddish feldspar gemstone known for its “intumescence”—a shimmering, glittery effect caused by internal inclusions of hematite or copper. Primarily mined in Oregon (USA), Norway, it has a hardness of 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale. It is used in jewelry and is associated with protection, energy and optimism.
Description
The stone ranges from orange, pink, and red to green or colorless, with a sparkling, metallic sheen known as vitrescence. A variety of oligoclase or orthoclase feldspar, often containing inclusions of hematite, goethite, or copper that create the metallic flash. The most famous, high-clarity variety is Oregon Sunstone (USA). Other sources include Norway, Siberia, Tanzania, and India. The stone is known as a stone of joy, protection and light, it is believed to enhance vitality, leadership, and personal safety power. It has a hardness of 6-6.5 and is best cleaned with warm, soapy water; it should not be treated in ultrasonic or steam cleaners. Sunstone is also found in Pleistocene basalt flows at Sunstone Knoll in Millard County, Utah.
